Cinco de Mayo Little Known Facts

Many mistake Cinco de Mayo for Mexican Independence Day but it’s not. Actually Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over the French in the battle of Puebla.

In the city of Puebla historical reenactments take place. Participants dress in historical French and Mexican army uniforms. And parades are held to commemorate the inspirational victory.

Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, primarily only celebrated in Puebla. It’s the US that widely celebrates Cinco de Mayo across the country with festivals, tequila and taco eating contests.
